Characters Guide

In Rune Factory 4, as in all Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games, social interactions are vital and knowing details about any Character, including his/her Birthday and favourite Gifts is the key to success.  There is an interesting new twist in Rune Factory 4 where Cooked Dishes are concerned.  It is not only at the Cooking Contest that Characters will be able to distinguish between a 'found' Dish and a Dish that you yourself prepared.  Whenever you give a Gift to some one, he/she will know if you cooked it personally and will remark upon the fact.

Note that most Characters can be chosen as temporary companions in the same way as you can choose a Tame Monster to accompany you.  They usually begin the game with fairly poor weapons and accessories and many have no armour or accessories.  By giving a Character a Weapon, Armour or Accessory as a Gift, you will improve their stats as, provided always it is the type of weapon that the Character favours, he/she instantly will equip it.   Press Start and then choose your Friends Tab to see all stats for any Character.  Monster Stats can be found there as well.  Characters are under PPL and Monsters under MON.  In order to see Weapons, Armour and Accessories, you first must have asked that Character to acocmpany you once.  Otherwise, you will see only the general description of the Character and Friendship or Love rating.  You do need at least a 3 Love or Friendship rating to have your invitation accepted.

Friendship and Love Levels in Rune Factory 4 can be much higher than in previous Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games.  The highest degree is 20 rather than 10.

EVENTS BETWEEN ELIGIBLE BACHELORS/ELIGIBLE GIRLS

A new option in Rune Factory 4 is the ability to trigger little Events between other Characters, including Eligible Bachelors/Eligible Girls.  Here is an example of an Event triggered at Arthur's Office when he was at 6 Hearts and Leon was at 4 Hearts:

In this situation, Freya chose the second option because she was interested primarily in Leon.  His heart level was lower than Arthur's level simply because the player meets Leon later in the game.   I will have to replay the event and choose Arthur to see if that leads to a 'date' event.

If she had chosen the first option:

Leon:  See?
Arthur:  I-I see... I'm so sorry...  I didn't know Freya wished for such travel...  It' not proper for a man to work so much that he loses sight of those closest to him.

End of Event

Note that you cannot expect a declaration of Love to be received in a positive fashion at 6 Hearts.

There are many little Dialogue Events that acan be triggered between non-eligible Characters as well as a combination of Eligible Characters and non-Eligible Characters.  Rune Factory 4 is one of the richest games in terms of dialogue that I have played.

BIRTHDAY GIFTS

Here is an example of this on Clorica's Birthday.  Freya tried a number of different Gifts to ascertain Clorica's responses to each.  What was most interesting, however, was the way she responded to the Apple Juice that Freya had cooked in the Mixer as opposed to Apple Juice found in a Chest and Cherry Sashimi that Freya had prepared herself.  Apple Dishes are a Favourite with Clorica, so her most enthusiastic responses were given to a Gift of Apple Juice.

Clorica's Responses to Birthday Gifts:

For Apple Juice found in a chest: Thank you! (with music)  It's always nice to get things I like, but it's even nicer to get them on my birthday.

For Apple Juice I made or an Apple: (Thank you very much!) Thank you! (with music)  It's always nice to get things I like, but it's even nicer to get them on my birthday.  (How amazing!) This looks handmade!  You always do such amazing things, Freya.

For Cherry Sashimi I made (with music)  Thank you.  Oh, a birthday present for me?  (How amazing!)  And it looks handmade, too!  Thank you! (with music)

You can try different Gifts with individuals to elicit their Responses.  It appears that a Gift to which the individual is fairly indifferent will result in a rather lukewarm expression of thanks.  If the Gift is something that the person actually likes, even if not a favourite, the Character usually will take the opportunity to inform you of the Item he/she loves most.

What is interesting is the number of community dialogues that exist in Rune Factory 4.  This is a new element in the series.  For example, when you find the bachelors seated at Porcoline's table, you may experience the following dialogue, very illuminating with respect to likes and dislikes:

Arthur:  It seems today's lunch is nothing but fish.
Dylas:  I got a lot of fresh fish today.
Leon:  It's a good day.  A very good day. 
Arthur: I'm glad we have sashimi here.  It's hard to eat broiled fish.
Kiel:  Me, I'm glad for the broiled fish.
Vishnal:  One mustn't pick and choose so much.  Best to eat what your'e given.
Leon:  He's right.  Don't be picky.
Doug:  But you don't like milk, Leon.
Leon:  But I'm special. (music)
Doug:  What the hell...
Arthur:  What about you, Vishnal?
Vishnal:  There's nothing I won't -
Kiel:  You don't like turnips, right?
Vishnal:  K-Kiel?!
Arthur:  Be honest with us, please.
Dylas: (Got it.)  Porcoline, can you whip up something turnip-based for Vishnal here?
Porcoline:  Here you go!
Vishnal:  Wh-What is wrong with you two?!
Arthur:  As a butler, you shouldn't be picky.  Consider it a professional challenge.

These are not necessarily favourites, but easily obtained in the first Spring, and you need to raise Heart Levels to 3 to be able to invite them on an adventure.  Furthermore, it is vital to raise Doug's Level before you lose him temporarily after the Boss Fight.

In Harvest Moon, there always was a single 'Most Favourite Gift' and a number of gifts that an individual loved or liked.  Most Favourites had the highest point value.  Loves came second and likes third.  The Most Detested Gift had the highest negative point value and so on.

In Rune Factory 4, there is more than one Gift that is a 'Most Favourite' and indeed, more than one Response to that Gift.  There is so much dialogue in this game that even reception of gifts can vary....  Note, however, that the Gifts that a Character himself or herself claims as a 'Favourite' sometimes are not at all, but simply 'Easy Gifts' that he/she loves.  You can see this with Arthur and his declaration that Pickled Turnips and Chinese Manju are his favourites.  When you give them to him, however, he simply tells you that he likes them.  This is a way to distinguish a 'liked' from a 'loved' gift.  Whatever the Character tells you on other occasions, if reception of the gift contains dialogue with the word 'like', it is not a Most Favourite.  If 'love' is part of the response, it either is a Most Favourite or certainly one that is loved.

Does it matter?  Of course not, but those of us who like to know the specifics of any Rune Factory or Harvest Moon game, who view these Characters as real people, do like to know what that individual loves MOST.

When you reach a certain Friendship Level with Characters, a big red Heart icon will appear above their heads when you pass them.   I do not know if this is something different but   a minor character named Feline Vanile will tell you about this:  'Y'know when you're talking to ome one and you get that whole X feeling...?  Well, I hear that right then, you might be able to see something you can't normally see.  It may actually be related to the Greeting Spell instead because she specifically says 'when you are talking to some one'.

That I was too late...  But that's when you fell into the picture, Frey.  When I met you, and learned that you bore the power of an Earthmate,..  I knew it was my last chance ot save my friends who'd turned themselves into Guardians... An Earthmate... must be able to break the forbidden spell cast by other Earthmates.

Ven: I'm sorry that I didn't.  But... if I told you the truth... I didn't think you'd go through with saving them... You have my sincerest apologies.

Even when I wasn't trying.  I was making friends.  You know how I met my most recent one?  The heavens dropped a new friend right on my head, that's how!  Fell on me without warning...  and started spewing all manner of smart-mouthed drivel against me, a Divine Dragon!  But... d espite having no past memories.. that person cares about others.... and has a kind, caring heart.

Ultimately, Venti collapses and Frey and Pico have a little chat about how there must be another way.  Frey rushes out to the plaza and Doug speaks to him there.

Frey:  I want to help Venti.  But...  I don't know what to do.  If I don't hurry, Venti'll...

The Chipsqueek has gone underground in Yokmir Forest.  You need to follow the Chipsqueek and it will leap off the cliff, taking you with it.  Go through the Cave to the point where you go up the stairway and then to the next chamber to find the Chipsqueek.  There will be a save point before the chamber with the Chipsqueek.  You will find a Rune Stone and then he will run off again.
